Prof. (Mrs.) Oluwabunmi Ideraoluwa Nimata Buhari

I am Professor Oluwabunmi Idera Nimata Buhari, MBBS, FWACP, a Professor of Psychiatry, Consultant Psychiatrist, and Acting Head of the Department of Behavioural Sciences in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. I am also an Honorary Consultant at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

I obtained my MBBS from the University of Ilorin in 1997 and became a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Psychiatry in 2007. I hold a Master of Arts in Peace and Development Studies (2015) and a Certificate in Global Health Trauma and Recovery from Harvard Medical School (2017).

My focus is on community and social psychiatry, with particular emphasis on student mental health, suicide prevention, and substance use. I am a co-investigator of the Nigerian Tertiary Institution Mental Health (TIM-Health) Programme. As the North-Central Coordinator for the Suicide Research and Prevention Initiative of Nigeria (SURPIN), I lead advocacy and community-based interventions across Nigeria’s North-Central geopolitical zone.

I have supervised resident doctors to Fellowship completion and served as an Examiner for the West African College of Physicians. I have published more than 22 peer-reviewed articles in journals including General Hospital Psychiatry, PLoS ONE, Academic Psychiatry, and West African Journal of Medicine. I am a member of several professional organisations, including the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) and the Association of Psychiatrists of Nigeria.

My portfolio spans medical undergraduates, nursing students, and Master of Public Health candidates, whom I instruct in psychiatry and mental health. I manage a general adult psychiatric clinic and spearhead community outreach initiatives.
